The cost of war extends its reach beyond the soldiers on the battlefield. Also ensnared in its grasp are the families and loved ones of the soldiers. The battlefield eventually reaches all of us, as a society and as part of humanity.
The Idaho Humanities Council is bringing one of the country’s top wartime correspondents to Boise to share stories from the front line and about the effect war has on families at home. On Thursday, October 23, ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Martha Raddatz will be the speaker at the Idaho Humanities Council’s 12th Annual Distinguished Humanities Lecture and Dinner at the Centre on the Grove.
Raddatz is ABC’s former Senior National Security correspondent and a three-time Emmy Award winner. She has made more than 13 trips to Iraq during the past four years to cover the war.
Raddatz also is the author of New York Times bestseller "The Long Road Home" (Berkley Trade, $15), the acclaimed book written about her experiences reporting the Iraq War.
The story of a brutal 48-hour firefight in Sadr City that marked the beginning of the Iraqi insurgency, it conveys in harrowing detail the effects of war on the soldiers and on families waiting back home. Raddatz’s book will be available for sale at the event.
Since 1997, the IHC has brought top historians and authors to Boise for the Council’s annual event. One of the most popular lecture events in Boise, it almost always sells out. A highlight of the event every year is the silent auction of rare and first edition books, benefitting Idaho Humanities Council programming.
The IHC is dedicated to increasing the awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the humanities in Idaho. IHC has sponsored hundreds of projects and programs to promote understanding of literature, history, law, philosophy, and other humanities disciplines.
In addition to their own programs, they also support programs around the state through their grants to museums, libraries, schools, and other organizations.
General tickets to the event are $55. Benefactor tickets are $125, offering an invitation to a pre-lecture reception with Raddatz in a private home and close-up seating at the dinner and lecture.
Tickets may be purchased by calling 345-5346 or by visiting www.idahohumanities.org.
