Imagine the unimaginable – you and your family are living in a war-torn country where your family has lived for generations, but now you are facing death threats because of your gender, ethnicity, religion or other facet of your identity. You make the heart-wrenching decision to leave your homeland, knowing it is your family’s only chance for survival.
A thousand questions race through your mind. Where will we live? How will we be treated? What life will we build?
The International Rescue Committee has helped thousands of refugees work through the answers to these questions for seventy-five years. Founded in 1933 by Albert Einstein to assist Germans fleeing from Hitler’s regime, the IRC has been helping our global neighbors in times of crisis.
The Boise chapter celebrated its 2nd birthday at the beginning of 2008, and has already helped over 500 refugees from around the world in making our area their new home. From providing help with housing, budgeting, English language skills and literacy, IRC is there to ease the way to allowing these refugee families to become self-sufficient in a new land.
You can help support the IRC by attending their Freedom Dinner on Saturday, October 18th. Enjoy a fantastic dinner and art auction in the beautiful setting at Barber Park at the Events Center.
You will also hear first-hand a moving tribute to refugees whose lives have been stripped away and are now being rebuilt in the Treasure Valley. It will inspire you, touch your heart, and make you so grateful for our incredibly country and how we help others.
Tickets are $50 each and can be purchased at 344-1792 or by visiting http://www.theirc.org/where/united_states_boise_id/.
