The holidays are upon us, and even with diminished consumerism this year, there are many ways to feel good when you are buying gifts. One of the best ways is when your purchases benefit our community in addition to the gift recipient. There are several opportunities in December for you to help the causes that help the community throughout the year.
The Idaho Human Rights Education Center has been selected by the Record Exchange to be the beneficiary of their annual holiday fundraiser. This will be the Record Exchange’s fourth year hosting a holiday fundraiser to benefit a Boise charity. The Center was selected this year because of their mission to educate teachers and children about human rights.
The holiday fundraiser will start with a silent art auction featuring vinyl toys designed by over 20 local artists. It will open on First Thursday, December 4, and stay on display for bidding through Sunday, December 21. All proceeds from the auction directly benefit The Center.
There also will be an exclusive party for Center supporters on Sunday, December 7. Participants can do their holiday shopping at the auction while enjoying music by local band Hillfolk Noir. The Center will also receive a percentage of sales during the party.

Another fabulous way to enjoy shopping while supporting the community is to attend Ballet Idaho’s Ballet Holiday on Saturday, December 6th. From 1pm-6pm, the Esther Simplot Performing Arts Academy will be transformed into an old-fashioned Victorian setting featuring many favorite characters from the Nutcracker ballet, activities from the era and shopping at the Ballet Idaho Boutique.
From Victorian storytime with Mrs. Fezzywig and a performance by magician, Herr Drosselmeyer, to face painting, ornament making and Christmas craft activities, this is an event that will get the entire family in the holiday mood. Mulled cider and gingersnaps can be enjoyed while shopping for that unique gift item at the boutique.
Open rehearsal of the upcoming Nutcracker ballet will be held, and attendees are welcome to take a peek. There will be photo opportunities with the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Nutcracker dancers from the company.
At 4:30 and 6:00 p.m. Ballet Idaho’s Youth Ensemble will perform The Legend of the Poinsettia and other dance works.
Tickets are $5.00 for a punch card for 3 activities, $10.00 for the dance performance, or $12 for both. Tickets are available at Ballet Idaho offices or at the door. For more information, call 343-0556.
